ABB press trip to South Africa and Namibia 2011

Powering southern Africa

In many parts of the world access to electricity is a given fact. In Africa however - especially Sub-Saharan Africa - many countries still have an electrification rate way below the world average. In an effort to raise availability, ABB is engaged in various projects to provide transmission & distribution networks and improve the efficient use of electricity by consumers.

The Caprivi Link, commissioned in 2010, connects the electricity grids between Zambia and Namibia through an HVDC Light system, stabilizing two weak networks and bringing grid reliability to the region. In Johannesburg ABB has installed building technology in a World Cup stadium and delivered solutions for the Gautrain Rapid Rail Link, connecting Johannesburg with the capital city, Pretoria.
