Q. Everybody needs a little PLC. But what exactly is it?

A. PLC stands for Power Line Carrier. It’s a well-established communication technology via overhead transmission lines, and was created by ABB - the company who introduced point-to-point communication over high-voltage lines in the 1950s. Since then, these systems have proven their worth in many installations around the world.

Q. How does ABB’s technology work?

A. ABB’s DartNet is a new PLC communication system designed especially for medium- and low-voltage distribution networks. It was developed for two-way communication between substations and load sites, and has special advantages for functions such as remote meter reading, load management and distribution automation.
Q. Why is this type of communication necessary?

A. Recently the energy markets in the US and in northern Europe have opened up along a wide front, and remote control and telemonitoring of the distribution networks is becoming established in many areas. As new laws are passed, deregulation on a similar scale is expected to occur throughout central and southern Europe.
The use of advanced communications for the economic management of electrical networks is playing an increasingly important role in this new environment. Such systems have been used for many years to support the control of the high-voltage transmission network and are now also being installed in medium and low-voltage networks.
