Extract of actual rotation experiences from our past graduates
When joining ABB, graduates will rotate through six different business areas, spending four months in each. This will include an overseas rotation based in Asia Pacific, as well as Corporate Services experience. In this way, graduates will be exposed to a variety of activities that can range from marketing and business development, to on-site testing, commissioning or project management.
The below extract is an example of the rotation and business experiences of some of our past graduates.
Rotation 1:
Division: Automation Products
Dept: Power Electronic Systems - Melbourne, VIC
“For my power electronics rotation, I was asked to perform some research on potential business opportunities brought about by changes to Australia’s national electricity laws.
By examining our customer requirements, our product portfolio and skills base, I was able to work with the team to develop two new services to add to the business portfolio, which were compliance testing for existing generator customers and design reports for excitation systems. I also spent three weeks on site commissioning an excitation system in a hydro powerplant in Tasmania.”
Rotation 2:
Division: Power Systems
Dept: Transmission & Distribution Substations - Brisbane, QLD
“For my second rotation I worked on the design and construction of a 220/33kV substation for a large mining operation in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. Activities ranged from design work in the office, coordinating equipment procurement from other ABB businesses and external suppliers, customer and supplier management, and supervising the construction site and participating in the commissioning of the substation.”
Rotation 3:
Division: Corporate Rotation
Dept: Occupational Health & Safety - Melbourne, VIC
“Working in the OHS group, I was given training in the legal and social importance of OHS, as well as ABB’s OHS processes. This was then put into practice by addressing a number of OHS issues across five Victorian sites and proposing and implementing solutions to hazards that existed.”
Rotation 4:
Division: Process Automation
Dept: Turbochargers – Sydney, NSW
“In my second year I joined the service team in the Turbochargers business, servicing ABB Turbochargers (manufactured in Switzerland) which are used in applications including large marine vessels (supertankers, cruise ships, etc) and power generation plants including co-generation sites in the Hunter Valley and diesel power stations in the pacific islands. I also developed a marketing plan for the expansion of the business into a new market, in cooperation with a partner company.”
Dept: Esso Support Group – Longford, VIC
“I joined the Esso Support group, which has the responsibility to manage and maintain the control systems for Esso’s (Exxon Mobil) oil and gas operations in Bass Strait and at the Longford processing plant. I gained experience in working with a service business controlling the systems of a major hazard facility and
off-shore operations on oil rigs in Bass Strait.”
Rotation 5:
Division: Power Products
Dept: Power Transformers - ABB Vietnam, Hanoi
“For my overseas rotation, I joined the team managing the upgrade of testing facilities in ABB’s Hanoi transformer factory. The role was largely based on project management (supplier and sub-contractor management and installation and commissioning of test equipment). I lived and worked in Vietnam’s historic and hectic capital city for four months.”
Rotation 6:
Division: Robotics - Melbourne, VIC
“The robotics rotation kicked off with a training course which had us learning the basics of controlling and programming a robot as well as the safety procedures involved. Armed with the basic skills, I was able to assist on a project for a major frozen food company requiring the installation and commissioning of two robots, whilst also working on a number of other projects including the National Robotics Competition, and the set-up of a training robot and system for ABB’s PickMaster palletising software.
Permanent ABB placement:
At the conclusion of the two-year rotation program, graduates will be offered a permanent placement within ABB Australia. Placements will be offered in line with business needs, giving consideration to the graduate’s field of study and areas of interest.
