Annual Report 1998: Building Systems

Building Systems

Business in the Building Systems Segment was characterized not only by the growing importance of systems for building automation, but also by the slowdown in construction activity, particularly in the east of Germany. Overall, however, the segment's companies succeeded in upping both revenues and earnings. This satisfactory performance is attributable to a partial refocus of the product range, plus successfully deployed programmes for cost-cutting and productivity enhancement.

ABB Gebäudetechnik, the segment's largest company, achieved a breakthrough in its role as a general contractor for technical building equipment. For the prestigious A+T Building at Potsdam Square in Berlin, the company has won the orders for construction phases 1 and 2, and possesses an option for phases 3 to 5. The A+T Building ranks with the Daimler-Chrysler Complex, the Sony Center and the German Railways` buildings as the biggest projects at Potsdam Square. In this, its largest order yet as a general contractor, ABB Gebäudetechnik is responsible for all the electrical systems, the indoor climate control, the instrumentation and control systems, the conveyor systems, plus the heating, refrigeration, sanitary and sprinkler installations.

Major projects in Berlin

Construction work at Berlin as the future seat of government underlines ABB`s status on the expanding market for building systems. ABB Gebäudeautomation GmbH has won an order for automating the buildings systems in the 1,500 office rooms of the Dorotheenblöcke parliament building. This automation package, which interfaces to a control system from ABB Energy Information Systems GmbH, enables low energy costs to be combined with maximized comfort and convenience for the buildings users. This order is`the biggest yet for the company. ABB Gebäudetechnik, finally, was responsible for all the electrical systems at the luxury Adlon Hotel directly at the Brandenburg Gate.

ABB sees building systems as a vital growth market of the future. Intelligent system packages can cut energy costs by around one third. Innovative data and communication networks are key components here, and ABB Netserv Daten- und Kommunikationsnetze GmbH has accordingly been set up as a subsidiary of ABB Gebäudetechnik AG. The company acts as a system integrator, implementing cross-vendor high-performance networks in buildings. In network operations and service support work, especially, the opportunities for growth are good, with annual rates of increase reaching around 20 per cent.
