Meler adhesives application technology
Meler Aplicadores de Hot-Melt S.A. is a company domiciled in Orcoyen-Navarra, Spain. It is a continuously expanding, international specialist in adhesives application technology. Devices and installations made by Meler are used world-wide in packing machinery and special applications.
The ABB AC500 automation system is integrated in the "macro system" melting unit Meler produces. The AC500 PLC monitors the speed of the supply pump and the melting temperature, whose values are transmitted to the control system through a RS232 interface by using a customised communication protocol. Data with external systems is exchanged via a Profibus interface.
The Automation Solution
ABB's scope of supplies:
- one PM571-ETH CPU of the automation system AC500;
- one FieldBusPlug PDP22-FBP;
- a customised function block library (to allow communication with external systems through a non-standardised communication protocol);
- one digital I/O module DC522; and
- one analogue I/O module AX521.

The AC500 product family comprises high-performance PLCs for small, medium and large-scale applications, not only for central, but also for decentral control concepts. The scalability of the AC500 allows the implementation of cost-efficient solutions for individual automation tasks. The AC500 range is easily configured and programmed with the PS501 programming software based on CoDeSys and so adapted to the individual requirements of the customer.
The digital DC522 I/O module of the AC500 system offers 16 channels which can be configured individually as inputs or outputs via the PS501 programming software. Four configurable analogue inputs and outputs make the I/O module AX521 a flexible solution for different customer applications.
