ABB has developed a new type of cable for HVDC Light that is suitable to lay underground as well as undersea! The cables have polymeric insulating material, which is very strong and robust.

The longest HVDC Light cable (so far) is the Murraylink transmission in Australia with a length of 180 km! To build this transmission with underground AC cables would have been technically difficult and very costly.
