HVDC Project Process

HVDC > HVDC project process

ABB can provide optimized AC/DC transmissions starting with feasibility studies and continuing to a complete turnkey transmission system and a customer support throughout the lifetime of the project.

As market leader, ABB possesses the technical skills, the resources and the experience necessary to assume full responsibility for
complete turnkey of HVDC/HVDC Light® transmissions including converter stations, overhead lines and underground or submarine cables. To an increasing extent many customers tend to purchase a whole dc transmission and not only the HVDC converters. This has been the case for Baltic Cable (stations + cable), SwePol (stations + cable), Argentina - Brazil I and II (stations + line) and all HVDC Light® cable transmissions.

For the specific case of HVDC/ HVDC Light® converter stations, ABB’s total responsibility undertaking includes a complete system delivery as well as all civil works and buildings. In such cases ABB utilizes competent local contractors to ensure maximum utilization of local labor and materials.

ABB has supplied more than half of the world’s HVDC converter station projects from the 6,300 MW Itaipu HVDC Project and the 2,000 MW Québec - New England Multi-terminal HVDC Transmission to the 7 MW HVDC Light® transmissions at Tjaereborg. All have been delivered on time or ahead of schedule. This represents a guarantee of professional project management.
