Châteauguay back-to-back upgrade

HVDC > HVDC References > North America > Châteauguay

The Châteauguay back-to-back station, situated southwest of Montréal, Québec, Canada, consists of two independent 500 MW modules and is owned by Hydro-Québec.

The back-to back station is supplied from a 315 kV source on the Hydro-Québec side and from a 120 kV source on the New York Power Authority (NYPA) side. Generation is supplied by the Beauharnois power station. The station was constructed by BBC and Siemens in 1984.

In 2008, ABB received a contract for the upgrading of the station. The control and protection system will be replaced by the fully digital MACH 2TM system. The new system will be commissioned during April and May in 2009, with an outage time of only seven weeks.

Since the station comprises two blocks and each block will be renovated separately, the station will maintain at least half of its capacity during the installation period.

This is the seventh HVDC upgrade project awarded to ABB since 2002. Read about the others at the bottom of this page.
