300 MVA reduced loss ABB block transformers in Paks Nuclear Power Plant

The scope of our supply includes generator protections, 400 kV busbar- and distance protections, 400 kV outdoor SF6 circuit breakers (manufactured based on the licence from BBC AG, our predecessor), 120 kV and generator circuit breakers, which all safeguard the operational safety of the power plant. PNPP has been implementing its plans aimed at retrofitting and replacing all these equipment since 2001. All along the project so far, ABB has proved highly reliable and supplied products of outstanding technical standards, while the engineering office in Hungary has also excelled and made special efforts to maintain our good track records at the power plant.

Pursuing its approved and authorised life time extending project, PNPP wishes to replace its 8 15.75/400 kV block transformers with rated output of 270 MVA between 2010 and 2014. As a result of the relevant procurement procedure completed over 2008-2009, ABB Ltd. was awarded with a contract to deliver 8 block transformers of enhanced output (300 MVA) and reduced loss as well as the related automatic cooling systems regulated with frequency converter and integrated into the transformer monitoring system.

We are especially proud of our colleagues Viktor Csernoch, Ervin Dienes and Zsolt Török who took part and were instrumental in the 2 year long preparatory work as well as in the bidding and negotiating processes in 2008.
