ABB equipping the world’s most advanced coking plant

Press Release, date of Announcement: December 19, 2001

ThyssenKrupp Stahl chooses IndustrialIT

As the construction consultant of Carbonaria GmbH & Co. KG, ThyssenKrupp Stahl AG contracted ABB to supply the entire electrification and process control for the new coking plant in Schwelgern. The total contract value is about US$ 32 million.

All automation levels of the new plant are continuously connected within a network. The complete data flow reaches from the plant control level to the individual measuring sensor. Dividing the coking plant into the production units -- coal pre-treatment, coke oven batteries with coke cooling, coke treatment and the by-product plant -- the plant requires sophisticated process control. Basic automation uses the ControlIT Module CMC 70. The 30 OperateIT operator stations, with 68 additional monitors, form the operating and monitoring level.

Via the Profibus DP/PA, the system field devices are connected directly to the process control system and can be configured and parametrized with EngineerIT. With its 25,000 I/Os, it will be the world’s largest Profibus system for industrial plants.

In addition to the measurment and control devices, the contract also includes the delivery of the necessary analysis technology and the medium- and low- voltage switchgear systems, including the transformers. As the general contractor, ABB is also responsible for providing numerous other facilities, such as plant lighting and communication.

The finished plant will be handed over in 2003. Compared to the old coking plant August Thyssen, which will be closed when the new coking plant Schwelgern is commissioned, the new coking plant will have only two batteries of 70 coke ovens each, versus six batteries and a total of 354 coke ovens in the old plant. Every day, 10,600 tonnes of coal will be converted into coke. The annual coke production will amount to approximately 2.5 million tonnes.
