Introduction
In order to improve control system behavior and thereby increase plant performance, ABB offers Control System Tuning.
ABB Control System Tuning focuses on stability, performance, and robustness, and also on dynamic interaction between control loops. ABB utilizes process experts specially trained in control loop tuning. A tuning team normally consists of two engineers including one expert on the specific control system.
The ultimate goal from loop tuning services is to obtain increased uptime, throughput and quality, as well as reduced emissions.
ABB's knowledge of automation systems, combined with out experience in oil and gas production processes and systems, are at your sevice when our team of techincal experts visits your plants.
Deliverables
Loop tuning is executed as a response to specific problems reported from customers or as an action after a Process and Control System Audit.
A loop tuning project consists of:
- A preparation phase where relevant audit or trip reports are reviewed.
- On-site modification of controller and transmitter parameters in tight cooperation with plant operators and management.
- Follow-up, including operator training
A project takes from a few days to two weeks on site. On an average offshore installation most of the work is done during one week. However, experience shows that it is wise to follow up the activity with an additional week. During the follow-up phase, plant operators and engineers are advised, and the process and control system behavior is monitored under an extensive set of operating conditions.
ABB also offers training courses in loop tuning to our clients.
Following successful project execution, we offer maintenance and further services aimed at maintaining and increasing the level of benefit that is captured during the project.

Technical features
In the execution of these services, ABB utilizes tools for data logging and analysis. These include:
ABB Loop Optimizer Suite : This is ABB's tool for easy connection to and analysis of ABB controllers.
Matlab : Matlab from Mathworks has a series of functionalities for control loop analysis and design.
If necessary, ABB also utilizes other tools like dynamic simulators or multiphase flow simulators to solve complex tuning problems.
