Västerås, Sweden – ABB has won a contract to supply electrification and brake systems to Alrosa, the Russian diamond mining company. The order is for four new mine hoists to Aikhal Mine, about 500 km north of Mirny.
The contract includes advanced hydraulically controlled disc brake systems; DriveIT drive systems for DC motors as well as IndustrialIT control systems. Each mine hoist will include eight brake units, making ABB‘s total supply 32 brake units, in addition to control and drive systems. The delivery will take place in stages, with the last one in the third quarter of 2002.
Alrosa is the world’s second largest diamond producer with several mines in the Mirny region. The mine authority is now carrying out a plan for shifting the production from open-pit mining to underground mining in order to assure production and lower costs. The Mirny region is situated in the eastern Siberia, about 800 km north of Lake Baykal.
ABB has supplied similar solutions to Alrosa in the past years. Thanks to ABB’s leading-edge technology in mine hoists, and good cooperation between ABB, Alrosa and the mechanical supplier Midiel in the Ukraine, the customer is very satisfied with ABB.
