2005-12-02 - Over 65 advanced ABB robots to support paint lines for three car models
Zurich, Switzerland, November 30, 2005 – ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has won contracts worth more than $20 million to supply 68 robots to carmaker Audi.
Audi will use the ABB robots on paint lines for its A3, A4 and A6 models, manufactured in the German cities of Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm.
“These systems demonstrate our world-class expertise in painting solutions for carmakers,” said Dinesh Paliwal, head of ABB’s Automation Technologies division. “We are delighted to partner with Audi on manufacturing technologies that are both highly cost effective and environmentally friendly.”
ABB’s scope of supply includes painting robots, type IRB5400 and units for opening doors and hoods. The painting robots, which load only the amount of paint necessary to cover each vehicle’s doors and hood, minimize paint waste and rinsing during color changes, yielding both cost and environmental savings.
The 68 ABB robots and associated equipment will be commissioned by the end of 2006.
