Testing power transformers

2017-04-28 - Every transformer produced is built to completion so that it can be function-tested. Testing is carried out in multiple steps, including, for example:

• Low voltage test – measurement of resistance and inspection of coils, among other things.

• Measurement of energy losses when idle and with a load. The low voltage side is short-circuited with copper bars, whereupon the current strength increases up to the transformer's nominal current and the measurement is carried out.

• Measurement of heat loss and cooling system. Heat ages paper and insulators in the transformer, so it is important to have good performance results here.

• Shock test to test the transformer's DC properties. Must always be carried out with a representative for the customer present.
