ABB Force Measurement was awarded a contract from the German mill builder Fröhling for two Millmate Thickness Gauging (MTG) Systems. The thickness gauges are to be delivered to KM Europa Metal’s (KME) copper mill in Osnabrück, Germany. Fröhling has received the contract from KME for a complete modernization of a 4-hi copper reversing mill, including replacement of existing contact gauges.
The increasing use of copper for modern applications has been accompanied by changing demands on copper products. TECU® sheets and strips for roofing and façades are manufactured according to the CEN requirements and KME's own strict corporate quality guidelines. In many cases, these guidelines prescribe considerably stricter tolerances for dimensions and properties than those set out in the relevant standards, making it easier and simpler to machine and hand work the material.
High demands on the quality of the finished products rolled in mills where productivity is continuously improved, call for outstanding performance of the measuring systems involved. By means of the new Pulsed Eddy Current technology it is possible to measure the thickness of non-ferrous strip contact-less, in an absolute way with high accuracy.
The two MTG systems will be installed at KME in Osnabrück, where the entry thickness for the copper strip varies between 0.4 – 10 mm and the exit thickness is set to 0.2 mm. Strip speed is 600m/min and strip width varies between min. 600 mm and max. 1300 mm.
