ABB signs frame agreements for Pearl GTL project

Switchgear, control systems will serve world’s largest GTL plant in Qatar

Zurich, Switzerland, Nov. 16, 2006 – ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has signed frame agreements with Shell and Qatar Petroleum to supply equipment for Pearl GTL, the world’s largest Gas to Liquids (GTL) complex at Ras Laffan, Qatar.

As part of a contract booked in the third quarter, ABB will supply all of the Pearl GTL plant’s switchgear (132 kilovolt (kV), 33kV, 11/6.6kV and low voltage) as well as the electrical control system.

“Backed by our service capability in Qatar, ABB will deliver a variety of high-quality products and systems for this prestigious project,” said Dinesh Paliwal, president of Global Markets and Technology for ABB. “This agreement reinforces the value of collaboration among multiple ABB businesses to give the operators of Pearl GTL proven solutions for effective plant management.”

Upstream, the Pearl GTL project will produce some 1.6 billion cubic feet per day of wellhead gas from the North Field and process it to produce approximately 120,000 barrels per day of condensate, liquefied petroleum gas and ethane. Downstream, dry gas will be used as feedstock for the onshore integrated GTL complex which will manufacture an additional 140,000 barrels per day of clean liquid hydrocarbon products and fuels. These include naphtha, GTL fuel, normal paraffins, kerosene and lubricant base oils.

The conversion of natural gas into liquid products and fuels is an attractive option to commercialize abundant gas reserves. Gas to Liquids (GTL) products, with virtually unlimited markets, offer a new way to utilize gas reserves, complementary to other traditional technologies such as Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and pipelines.

The main product from the Pearl GTL plant will be GTL Fuel - a colorless and odorless fuel that is virtually free of sulfur and aromatics. Compared with refinery diesel fuel, GTL Fuel significantly reduces local emissions, either as a blend with diesel fuel or 100% pure. This is particularly relevant in large cities where air quality is poor. GTL Fuel can be used in conventional diesel engines and can utilize the existing diesel distribution and refueling infrastructure.
