ABB spotlights energy efficiency at Power-Gen 2006

2006-05-31 - ABB wins $44 million order for instrumentation, control systems and electrical systems for the Ras Abu Fontas power plant in Qatar

Cologne, May 31, 2006

ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, will focus on energy efficiency at this year’s Power-Gen Europe exhibition at Cologne, Germany.

Under the banner "Innovation and Energy Efficiency – Powered by ABB," the company will exhibit a broad cross-section of its latest products and systems that increase energy efficiency in power plants. ABB is a leading supplier of instrumentation, control systems and electrical systems for the power generation industry.

ABB will announce at the exhibition an order worth $44 million from General Electric for the Ras Abu Fontas power and water plant in Qatar, a gas-fired power plant with waste steam generator. The order comprises the complete electrical engineering of the plant and the supply of a 220 kV gas insulated substation including transformers. The project scope includes design, engineering, installation and commissioning. ABB previously supplied the instrumentation for the GT 13E turbines for the B and B1 plants.

Among the highlights that ABB is presenting at Power-Gen 2006 are:

System 800xA – for the next generation of power plants
A uniquely future-proof control system that unites in one common and consistent environment the entire spectrum of functionalities for operation, diagnosis, engineering, information and plant management for all control system applications, from unit and turbine control to the integration of substation automation.

UNITROL 6000 – the new AVR and static excitation system
ABB’s latest generation of automatic voltage regulators uses the most advanced microprocessor and IGBT (insulated gate bipolar transistor) technology for the best possible electromagnetic immunity. Based on the powerful AC800PEC controller and offering seamless integration with System 800xA, UN6000 is designed for all sizes of synchronous generators and motors.

MEGATROL – a new combined excitation and starting solution for gas turbines
A combined control solution for both static excitation and static starters in a single compact package. Equipped with the powerful AC800PEC controller and an integrated control terminal with user-friendly LCD touch screen, MEGATROL is designed for gas and pumped storage hydro turbines.

OPTIMAX™ - plant management and optimization
A power plant optimization suite of systems that enables power generators to monitor and predict plant performance, schedule the most economical operation for each generation unit, optimize the combustion process and reduce emissions, and improve data access and lower the costs of maintenance.

System-independent engineering integration platform with a common plant database for the engineering of instrumentation, electrical systems and control systems. This innovative platform opens a new dimension in fast and efficient engineering by enabling complete and consistent data exchange with process engineering tools, automatic workflows and integrated quality management.

Air-cooled 6 kV medium voltage drive – ABB is the world’s leading supplier of drives. This new air-cooled version of the ACS 5000 series of water-cooled medium voltage AC drives is available from 2 to 7 megawatts at voltages up to 6.9 kV, and is designed for pump and fan applications that are normally mechanically controlled. Retrofitting these high-powered motor applications with ABB drives produces significant improvements in efficiency and reliability.

Power-Gen Europe 2006 is a leading exhibition and forum for the power generation industry. The ABB stand is in Hall 6, Stand G34.

ABB is a leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve performance while lowering environmental impact. The ABB Group of companies operates in around 100 countries and employs around 105,000 people.
