Control System Security Policy Validation Service verifies network security

2009-11-11 - ABB network security compliance service helps customers meet US government and corporate security requirements

The newly released Security Policy Validation Service tests the compliance of installed process control systems with existing security policies, to insure compliance with government and corporate objectives for cyber security.

Compliance auditing, compliance testing, and remediation are provided.

“This service helps customers understand and comply with today’s complex security requirements and ensure protection of critical infrastructure and confidential data,” commented David Macy, US ABB Process Automation Service, Technical Advisor Manager.

ABB validation engineers audit and test policies using a representational off-line system, based on the installed system architecture. Specialized tools and reports are used to identify configuration settings that are non-compliant with policy standards.

Recommendations and remedial activities are provided to bring the system into compliance. Some software upgrades and major system changes may require additional proposals, based on the scope of work and software required to bring the system into compliance.

The service is available for Extended Automation System 800xA, including Connect products: PLC connect, Harmony Connect, MOD 300 Connect, System six Connect; and Symphony Harmony/INFI90.

Optional on-going compliance support services are available to manage intentional or unintentional changes that may affect compliance, ie: replacement of PCs, reloads, upgrades, new threats and other causes. Because of this, it is recommended to include a security policy review as part of an annual maintenance program. Periodic audits may be delivered via remote services or on-site visit.

Optional Services

  • Periodic audits to verify settings
  • Scheduled update support services
  • Implementation of policy requirements of new equipment
  • Automatic notification, maintenance and installation software revisions, service packs, Microsoft® updates, etc.
  • Training of security responsible personnel
  • Assistance with creating procedure documents for loading computers with correct settings
