ABB and AFPC sign DCS Maintenance Contract in Damascus, Syria

Both companies entered into a three-year DCS Maintenance Service with an optional two-year extension.

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia, January 31, 2003: ABB, the leading power and technology group today announced that ABB in Saudi Arabia and Al Furat Petroleum Company - a Syrian joint stock company between state owned Syrian Petroleum Company, Shell & Petro, Canada - signed a contract for the provision of DCS (Distributed Control system) maintenance service for three years.

The contract was signed in the AFPC boardroom in Damascus on January 2, 2003 by AFPC representatives: Haytham Ghanem, Chairman; Chris Haynes, GM and Engineer; and A. Kuzbari, member of the Board of Directors. The ABB team included: Mahmoud Shaban, Saudi Arabia Country Manager; Faraj Al-Jarba, Gulf Near East Country Manager; and George Kuruvilla, S&M Manager.

The contract covers fixed remote advisory & diagnostic support and corrective site intervention visits of the customer's ABB Advant Master-installed base in utility, power & power distribution plants in various AFPC locations. The contract also covers several key areas of development support such as: system implementation, software updates and future upgrades. At the contract signing, ABB's Mahmoud Shaban said: "This strategic alliance shows that ABB intends to remain a significant partner to their customers in the local area. Our aim is to build and broaden our local capability in the area of automation technology to all our regions and customers".

Faraj Al-Jarba of ABB added: "The basic provisions of the contract meet the purpose and cooperation requirements of both AFPC and ABB. Our goal is to provide the industry with the latest and cost-effective system offerings from ABB with a strong commitment to timely after-sales-support".
