Ingenious paint solution from ABB Robotics short-listed for top invention award

2010-05-28 - ABB are delighted to be nominated for the second year running as finalists in the prestigious IERA Invention and Entrepreneurship Award.

The International Federation of Robotics (IFR) and the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society jointly sponsor the IERA Award. The intention is to highlight and honour the achievements of inventors with value creating ideas and entrepreneurs who propel those ideas into world-class products.

ABB is one of six finalists and will present the newly introduced "Portal for the Robotic Surface Treatment of Rotor Blades" which is a mobile paint booth specially designed to paint long parts such as turbine blades for the wind power generation industry.

In a conventional spray booth the part to be painted has to be moved through a traditional spray booth. The portal solution reverses this process by moving the spray booth along the part. This allows manufacturers greater flexibility and future proofing by enabling parts to be painted regardless of their length. Furthermore, manufacturers benefit from significant energy savings by reducing the power required for air handling and conditioning due to the compact size of the new booth when compared to that of a conventional paint booth.

The ABB Portal has been developed especially to meet the needs of the wind generation industry, but there is already great interest in applying the new technology in other industries such as rail, aerospace and transportation. The portal increases production capacities and helps manufacturers take the step to serial production and be more competitive. Cost and energy efficient production will be the key to giving wind energy an advantage over energy from non-renewable sources.

These achievements will be recognized in a specially organized IEEE/IFR Joint Forum on Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Robotics and Automation, which is being held in conjunction with the 41st International Symposium on Robotics and the 6th German Conference on Robotics which take place in association with the Automatica 2010 fair.

The IERA Award Ceremony will take place on Tuesday evening, 8 June 2010, during the Gala Dinner at the famous Lenbach Palais.

Further information on the IERA Awards
In 2005 the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society (IEEE/RAS) and the International Federation of Robotics (IFR) agreed to jointly sponsor the Invention and Entrepreneurship Award. The purpose of this award is to highlight and honour the achievements of the inventors with value creating ideas and entrepreneurs who propel those ideas into world-class products. At the same time the joint disposition of the award underlines the determination of both organizations to promote stronger collaboration between robotics science and robotics industry. The annual presented award consists of a plaque and a $2,000 honorarium.

Six Finalists have been nominated by the IERA Award Committee to present their story of the genesis of a successful innovative product in robotics and automation at a special ISR/ROBOTIK 2010 Session. The Plenary Lectures are part of the programme of ISR/ROBOTIK 2010 and will be held on 8 June 2010 from 08:45 AM to 12:00 PM in hall 0, room 4b, New Munich Trade Fair Centre. IEEE Robotics and Automation Society (IEEE/RAS) and the International Federation of Robotics (IFR) agreed to jointly sponsor the Invention and Entrepreneurship Award.
