2008-06-12 - ABB in Italy has introduced an energy efficiency award for companies who have made the most progress in reducing their energy consumption in motor and drive systems.
By ABB Communications
The inaugural ABB Energy Efficiency award was launched at a ceremony in Milan last month, attended by 25 technical trade press representatives and numerous customers. Three companies were recognized for their efforts and were presented with an ABB plaque - Iveco, TenarisDalmine and Bayer CropScience.
The ABB Energy Efficiency award is an automation products initiative in Italy that recognizes customers who make the positive switch to energy efficiency, and use ABB technology to get them there.
To qualify for the award, companies must become a partner in the Motor Challenge Programme, a project sponsored by the European Commission to improve the energy efficiency of the motor driven systems in plants, and they must achieve an annual energy saving of 200 megawatt-hours by installing ABB drives and high efficiency motors.
Angelo Baggini from Motor Challenge Programme, a project sponsored by the European Commission to improve the energy efficiency of the motor driven systems in plants.Iveco (automotive), TenarisDalmine (iron metallurgy) and Bayer CropScience (chemical/ pharmaceutical), all significantly reduced energy consumption in their respective plants during 2007 by installing ABB high performance motors and drives.
The total energy reduction achieved by all three companies equals more than two million kilowatt-hours (kWh) per year (a kilowatt hour is equivalent to the energy consumed by a 100 watt light bulb burning for 10 hours).
“We are talking about a truly alternative and concrete method to address the constant increase in energy costs in Italy,” said Alessandra Boffa, energy efficiency manager for automation products in Italy and promoter of the award.
“Although the application environments of the winning companies differ widely, the one aspect they have in common is a determination to reduce costs and contain environmental impact,” said Giampiero Frisio, automation products local division manager, Italy. “We are proud that three leading companies in their respective industries recognized ABB as their ideal technical partner to help facilitate the transition to energy efficiency technologies.”
At the launch ceremony, the three companies presented their performance improvements and outlined the direct and indirect benefits that they achieved from the new installations, emphasizing the role that ABB played in this process.
Jukka Tolvanen, global energy efficiency manager for low voltage drives.Said Boffa: “This excellent initiative allows us to raise awareness of energy efficiency in a country that is still not quite responsive to the importance of the issue, and lets us expand the knowledge and appreciation of our technologies, skills and capabilities.”
“The Italian team did a great job,” said Jukka Tolvanen, global energy efficiency manager for low voltage drives. “Bringing together our specialists, with the representatives of some of the key players in Italian industry including large end-users and utility companies, and presenting the results achieved to the technical trade press, is undoubtedly the best way to share the success of this initiative.”
