2013-11-11 - Offering small size and low weight combined with high efficiency and reliability, ABB’s new multi-MW class permanent magnet generators provide an easy way for turbine OEMs to enter the offshore markets.
ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, is launching a new high speed (HS) permanent magnet generator (PMG) in frame size 710 to cover offshore powers up to 7 MW. This generator will expand ABB’s proven HS PMG family to offer another option for multi-megawatt offshore turbines in addition to the previously launched semi-integrated medium speed PMG.
Following the introduction of the new generator, ABB’s high speed permanent magnet range now covers 1.5 - 7 MW for both low and medium voltage (690 V or 3,3 kV), either air or water cooled. The generators deliver the highest efficiency available in the market – over 98% at rated speed and still more than 97% at only 20% load. Their patented PM rotor technology has proven short circuit withstand without demagnetization.
All ABB high speed wind power generators (doubly-fed, induction and PM) are based on a standard modular platform principle, featuring an adaptable turbine interface. This means that these generators can be fitted into almost all existing HS turbine types. As the doubly-fed and PM generators use the same familiar HS drivetrain, upgrading to the full converter concept does not involve major re-engineering work for OEMs who are already building doubly-fed turbines. This easy upgrade enables them to achieve superior grid compliance on land and gain fast entry to the offshore markets in the multi-MW class.
“We’ve standardized the basic structure across our whole high speed permanent magnet range. This enables us to use cost-effective serial manufacturing and ensures short delivery times. Our high speed PMGs are very robust, which means low maintenance and high availability – both essential factors for turbines that operate offshore,” says Raimo Sakki, product manager for wind power generators at ABB.
“In fact ABB supplies all the electrical components needed in a wind turbine, with everything designed to fit together perfectly. Our fully compatible generator-converter packages are a good example. They work optimally in all conditions - including at high altitudes and offshore - to ensure trouble free operation. ABB wind economy means better turbine performance."
The new generator will be officially launched at EWEA Offshore, which is being held in Frankfurt, Germany, November 19 - 21.
Over the last 30 years ABB has supplied more than 35,000 wind power generators for all drivetrain types from low speed direct drive and medium speed hybrid to high speed PMGs. ABB delivered the induction generator for the world’s first offshore turbine. It has experience in PM technology since the 1990s, and introduced its first high speed PMG in 2003. ABB is also a leading manufacturer of optimized generator-converter packages and other electrical wind power products.
