2009-10-14 - Fifth of a six-part series of Smart Grid-related podcasts from the Transmission & Distribution World (T&D World) Magazine website.
Transmission & Distribution World is currently running a six-part podcast series on their website. This series, sponsored by ABB, features a discussion around the definition of a 'Smarter Grid' given by ABB executives and managers directly involved in Smart Grid activity.
The fifth podcast features Markus Braendle, ABB Cyber Security Manager, Power Systems Division (based in Raleigh), and Steve Kunsman, Assistant Vice President of Substation Automation Products and Head of Global Product Management (based in Allentown, PA), and is entitled: "Building a Smarter Grid: The Need for Greater Cyber-Security and Physical Security."
The Smart Grid will not reach its full capabilities if it is vulnerable to malicious outside threats such as hackers and cyber-terrorists, as well as potential natural disasters. This will require a new level of protection and security that was not necessary in the 20th century but is tantamount for reliability and success in the 21st century. This fifth podcast in the Smarter Grid series examines the state of cyber-security and physical security for the Smart Grid, reliability standards, and what challenges lie ahead to make sure the proper protections are in place and functioning.
