Protecting a major power system
Created in 1933 by President Roosevelt, the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) is now the nation’s largest federally-owned power supplier. It serves nearly 8.5 million people in seven states. To enhance the reliability and voltage stability of its vast transmission system, TVA called ABB. The solution was a PSG 830 wide area monitoring system (WAMS). The system has four monitoring points, with plans to expand to 16.
ABB is also partnering with TVA in an EPRI-sponsored research project. The goal is to develop the next generation of software systems to monitor and protect the power grid.
