ABB wins $25 million power order for sub-stations in Qatar

2009-04-30 - Underground substations to save space and serve residential customers

Zurich, Switzerland, April 30, 2009 – ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has secured a $25 million order from Al Jaber & Partners Construction & Energy Projects (WLL) to supply and install two indoor gas insulated substations (GIS) rated at 66/11kV , in the new city of Lusail in Qatar.

The substations will be located underground. As part of the turnkey project, ABB will supply power transformers, high-voltage GIS (gas-insulated switchgear), medium-voltage switchgear, as well as the substation automation and telecommunication systems.

“ABB’s compact GIS substation solution is ideally suited for such urban applications where space is at a premium, and environmental concerns and aesthetics play an important part,” said Claudio Facchin, global head of ABB’s substation business, within the company’s Power Systems division.

Industrial development is driving demand for residential real estate in Qatar. The new city of Lusail, 20 kilometers north of the capital, Doha, will have a high-quality residential environment enhanced by leisure facilities and other amenities.

Substations are key installations in the transmission and distribution grid that facilitate the transformation of voltage levels and the distribution of electrical power. ABB has an installed base of over10,000 substations around the world across a range of voltage levels up to 800kV
