ABB launches new compact generators for diesel-electric locomotives

2014-09-24 - The vibration resistant design of ABB’s latest traction generators boosts the reliability of modern low emission engines in diesel-electric locomotives.

ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, is expanding its high performance WGX traction generator portfolio to cover a power range from 1 to over 3 MW. These generators offer high efficiency (over 96.9%) and reduced maintenance in a compact and flexible design.

The innovative design is extremely vibration resistant, and even the standard single-bearing arrangement can withstand the higher torsional vibrations of the shaft line induced by modern high compression engines. This eliminates the need for additional couplings, enabling locomotive builders to minimize the space requirement. The generators’ robust structure ensures smooth, trouble-free operation, increasing overall genset lifetime.

ABB is an independent generator supplier with IRIS certified production facilities and extensive R&D resources. It has a long track record of working together with diesel engine manufacturers and locomotive builders, and this collaboration has produced a number of dedicated calculation tools.
