ABB signs scientific research cooperation agreement with HUST

The research project will focus on the development of topology and hardware in power electronics

ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, today signed a three-year cooperation framework agreement with Huazhong University of Science & Technology (HUST). Under the terms of the agreement, ABB will provide $275 thousand to support HUST’s research project to focus on the development of topology and hardware in power electronics. Participants at the signing ceremony included Dr. Qianjin Liu, head of ABB Corporate Research Center China (CRC China) and Chief Technology Officer of ABB (China) Limited, and Mr. Kang Yong, the Dean of School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, HUST.

Power electronics is key to cope with the fast development of distributed generation and controllable load. This research project will help ABB to further increase the accumulation of cutting-edge technologies, design and develop convertors in a smaller size with higher efficiency so as to meet the changing demands and trends of the power market.

HUST is a national key university directly under the administration of the Ministry of Education of P. R. China and is one of the first universities to join the national “211 Project” and “985 Project”. It was founded on May 26, 2000 as a result of the merger of the former Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Tongji Medical University and Wuhan Urban Construction Institute. Its comprehensive R&D strengths are among the best in China with the best power electronics & electrical drive discipline in the country.

ABB has cooperated with HUST in fields such as wind power, photovoltaic (PV) energy storage, and DC/ DC converters since 2011. The two parties also promoted technical development by setting up joint research labs and holding regular seminars. Moreover, ABB has provided scholarships for HUST students for many years to support top students and underprivileged students majoring in electrical engineering and automation. To date, ABB has already donated nearly one million yuan in total to help over 180 HUST students finish their studies.

Over the past three years, ABB has invested more than RMB 10 million yuan to conduct extensive cooperation with around 20 universities and research institutions, such as Zhejiang University, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Xi`an Jiaotong University and South China University of Technology. The research projects cover different areas of power and automation technology, such as industrial robots, renewable integration, electric vehicle charging and industrial nanotechnology.

Innovation can’t be separated from talent cultivation. In October 2015, ABB announced to donate power and automation equipments worth 1.7 million yuan to Xinjiang University for setting up a new laboratory, and to provide 100,000 yuan as a scholarship annually in the next 5 years. Meanwhile, ABB has donated over 12 million yuan to the ABB-New Great Wall Fund during the past 11 years to finance underprivileged college students majoring in power and automation to complete their studies. To date, this initiative has benefitted more than 2,000 students from 44 universities in China.

As one of ABB’s seven major research centers worldwide, CRC China was launched in early 2005. In Beijing and Shanghai, it includes a power electronics laboratory, a material and insulation laboratory, a processing laboratory, an environment laboratory, and a mechatronics laboratory. The center is focusing on power and automation research in renewables integration, outdoor insulation, small parts assembly and other areas. To date, CRC China has applied for nearly 200 international patents and played a leading role in the research and innovation of fields such as machinery, controls, materials and power electronics. Currently, ABB employs more than 2,000 R&D experts in China committed to local innovation.
