ABB commissions transformer unit in Poland

2014-04-03 - New feeder factory in Lodz to produce transformer components and high-efficiency TriDry distribution transformers

ABB commissioned a new factory at its campus in Lodz, Poland, to manufacture a range of components to serve its transformer units in Europe. These components form an integral part of power, distribution and traction transformers. The investment includes a center where product development, in particular optimization of production methods and technologies, will take place. Around 140 people will be employed at the new unit.

The factory will be the first of its kind in Europe to start commercial production of dry transformers with a triangle core. The TriDry range of transformers offers a reduction in no-load losses by 20 percent as well as lower weight and noise levels in comparison to standard dry-type transformers.

The factory will supply two neighboring ABB plants in Lodz that manufacture power transformers for voltages up to 500 kilovolts (kV), oil-type distribution transformers and amorphous core transformers, which offer lower no-load and load losses.

“This is yet another example of ABB’s balanced footprint approach” said Markus Heimbach, head of ABB’s Transformers business, a part of the company’s Power Products division. “It helps us to optimize our operations and presence in the market, leverage skill synergies and serve our customers better.”

The modular design of the factory allows each module to operate independently of each other. This is a useful feature especially when one or more modules are not operating as it makes it possible to reduce consumption of power. This design coupled with the installation of dry transformers and a heat exchanger are expected to yield up to 25 percent savings in electricity and heating costs.

The new transformer unit further strengthens ABB’s strong footprint in Poland where the company already hosts several production units, including medium and high-voltage equipment, low-voltage switchgear, high-efficiency electric motors and power electronics.
