Thai Petrochemical awards Technical Audit contract to ABB

Study to identify expenditures needed for regulatory compliance and operational reliability

Bangkok, Thailand, September 18, 2003 - Thai Petrochemical Industry (TPI) Public Company has awarded ABB a US$1.1 million contract to conduct a technical audit on their manufacturing facilities utilizing ABB Process Solutions consultancy and engineering expertise in the Petrochemical, and Oil and Gas sectors.

The scope of the contract includes a Site Economic and Criticality Study; Technology Assessment; and a review of Maintenance Practices and Occupational Health & Safety processes. The purpose of the study is to identify the level of expenditures required over the next five years to ensure regulatory compliance and operational reliability.

ABB will employ its proprietary Manufacturing Performance Assessment Process to help establish how TPI rates against worldclass benchmarks on make, process yield, costs, customer service, safety and environmental standards. These findings followed by more detailed studies will highlight the major improvement opportunities, their costs and the implementation risks for the critical assets on the site.

"We recognize how important a strong petrochemical industry is to Thailand, and we are honored to be working with TPI on this very important project," said Jonny Axelsson, President and Head of ABB Thailand. "We look forward to contributing to the further establishment of TPI as a strong player in the global petrochemical industry."

" TPI awarded the contract to ABB due to its competence in the petroleum and petrochemical industries, and prior experience in Thailand. ABB demonstrated a strong commitment to the project. Overall ABB offered the best value proposal" said Mr. Pala Sookawesh, the former governor of PTT and currently TPI’s Plan Administrator.

The engagement will include 30-40 ABB consultants drawn from Asia, the United Kingdom and the United States. The project is on a fast track: in 45 days, ABB will present its initial findings to TPI. A detailed plan describing the key improvement programs will be completed in 90 days.

TPI operates the largest integrated petrochemical complex in Southeast Asia with world-scale oil refining, ethylene and downstream petrochemical plants, and is a key company in the Thai chemical sector.

ABB (www.abb.com) is a leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve performance while lowering their environmental impact. The ABB Group of companies operates in around 100 countries and employs about 133,000 people.
