ABB to supply Brazil’s largest industrial substation

Improved power supply will increase productivity of aluminum smelter

Zurich, Switzerland, April 22, 2005 - ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, said today it has received an order from Brazil worth $30 million to supply three industrial substations, including the largest turnkey substation ever for an industrial customer in the country.

Awarded by leading aluminum producer Companhia Brasileira de Alumínio (CBA), the contract will sharply increase production at an aluminum smelter in Alumínio in the state of Sao Paulo.

“Our customers know they can count on reliable, robust ABB industrial equipment,” said Peter Smits, head of ABB’s Power Technologies division. “ABB industrial substations meet their demand for stable power.”

The 750 MVA (megavolt ampere) substation will provide power for an additional furnace room, so that CBA can increase its primary aluminum production to 460,000 tons per year. Power supply will be strengthened by one 460/230 kV (kilovolt) stepdown substation and two additional 230 kV switching substations, and 230 kV and 460 kV transmission lines.

The capacity of the new substation can be expanded from 750 MVA to 1 GVA (gigavolt ampere), if CBA decides to expand its production capacity.

ABB is already supplying CBA with a 230kV substation and rectifiers for another furnace room that is due to commence operation in May 2005.

ABB ( is a leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve performance while lowering environmental impact. The ABB Group of companies operates in around 100 countries and employs about 102,000 people.
