ABB wins US$ 15 million order to optimize power plant in South Africa

New control system to extend lifespan of power station

Zurich, Switzerland, August 11, 2003 - ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has won a US$ 15 million order to supply unit and turbine control systems for South Africa's national electricity supplier Eskom.

The new system will enhance and upgrade three units at the utility's Arnot power station to an automated system.

ABB's state-of-the-art will technology will help Eskom to lower maintenance costs, increase operational efficiency and extend the plant's lifespan. ABB said the order recognizes its global technology strengths, and its high engineering and project management capabilities in South Africa.

The project involves the supply and installation of field instrumentation based on ABB's 2600 range, Procontrol P Power Plant Control System including turbine control and protection as well as boiler protection.

The operator stations for these three units will be Linux-based, with the order also including the upgrading of the former Unix-based operator stations to Linux. A new control system for Electrical Balance of Plant, based on ABB's MicroSCADA, is also part of the order.

Work on the project will start this month and be completed by August 2005.

The use of common spares, maintenance and operating procedures across the plant's six units will reduce Eskom's cost. The company will be able to retain its existing training simulator and reduce overall project execution risk due to ABB's previous experience at the plant.

ABB successfully installed similar systems at three other units at Arnot power station in 1998.

ABB ( is a leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve performance while lowering environmental impact. The ABB Group of companies operates in around 100 countries and employs about 133,000 people.
