Free wallchart makes swirl and vortex flowmeters easy

2007-10-24 - ABB has expanded its range of flowmeter selection wallcharts with a new practical guide providing all you need to know about vortex and swirl flowmeters.

The new wallchart spells out the respective benefits of both types of meter, with pictures of meters in-situ to show the types of applications where each can be used. A key application for swirl and vortex meters is in monitoring and targeting programmes aimed at measuring steam and hot water consumption across a site. The high accuracy delivered by both types of meter make them ideal for pinpointing energy consumption to exact departments and processes and for helping encourage greater energy efficiency. Cutaway diagrams are also included explaining the operating principles of both types of meter.

Selection made easy
An at-a-glance selection table at the centre of the wallchart shows the different substances that swirl and vortex meters can measure, namely clean liquids, dirty liquids, corrosive liquids and vapour, gas and steam. It also provides information about the different temperature ranges, with each meter rated for its suitability for applications from -55°C to +400°C.

Also included on the wall chart are illustrations showing the space and pipe lengths required for each type of meter, to minimise the effect of flow distortions caused by obstacles such as control valves, various pipe bend configurations and pipe reducers. ABB’s vortex and swirl meters are ideal for both normal and extremely confined installations. Vortex meter designs typically require between 10 and 50 pipe diameters upstream, and 5 to 10 downstream for flow conditioning, depending on the source of flow disturbance. In contrast, the swirl meter typically requires just three upstream and two downstream, making it ideal for retrofit applications.

ABB's swirl and vortex meters provide stand-alone volume flow measurement for a wide variety of substances and direct mass flow of dry or saturated steam, enabling greater accuracy with virtually zero maintenance – especially in applications where the flow varies over a significant range. Rather than an accuracy of two percent of the upper flow range, which is the best an orifice plate can provide, vortex and swirl meters offer an accuracy class as good as +/-0.5 percent of reading over the entire flow range.
