Paliwal named head of ABB Automation Technologies
Zurich, Switzerland, October 29, 2002 – ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has streamlined its divisions to strengthen its customer focus. The former Power Technology Products and Utilities divisions have been merged to form Power Technologies, under the leadership of Peter Smits; and the Automation Technology Products and Industries divisions have been merged to form Automation Technologies, under the leadership of Dinesh Paliwal.
ABB Automation Technologies has $9.3 billion in revenue and 63,000 employees, which makes ABB one of the world’s largest automation companies. “ABB is the only company in the world offering both process automation and robotics-based discrete automation products and services. This has become very important to our customers as they seek further efficiencies through integrating continuous and discrete manufacturing processes,” said Paliwal, who in addition to being division head is also a member of ABB’s Group executive committee.
ABB integrates its broad automation technology base with its Industrial IT control architecture, an object & aspect-based platform that makes it easy for customers to integrate all forms of information for better, faster control of their manufacturing processes. The Industrial IT platform is also available to third parties.
Paliwal, 44, has 24 years of automation technology experience. He began his career in 1979 with Ballapur Industries in India. After joining ABB in U.S. in 1985, he served in a number of engineering, sales, marketing and management roles in India, U.S., China, Singapore, Australia and Switzerland. In 1994, he became head of ABB’s multi-industry business in China, which included several joint ventures. In 1998, he became head of ABB’s global Paper, Printing, Metals and Minerals business, and was then named to head the global Process Industries division in 2001. In 2002, he became head of Industries division. Paliwal holds master’s degrees in applied science & engineering and business administration from Miami University, Ohio, U.S., as well as a master’s degree in paper science & engineering from Roorkee University in India. He is chairman and board member of several ABB Group companies in Asia, Europe and the Americas
