ABB wins $25 million power equipment order in China

Gas-insulated switchgear will ensure reliable power supply in Shanghai

Zurich, Switzerland, July 16, 2004 - ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, said today it won a $25 million contract to deliver 500 kV gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) to China – the latest in a series of orders designed to improve power supply.

The GIS will be installed in converter stations that will support the 1,100 kilometer-long, high-voltage direct current (HVDC) power line which ABB is building to connect the Three Gorges power plant with Shanghai.

“Our GIS technology is a robust and space-saving solution specifically designed for such high power ratings,” said Peter Smits, head of ABB’s Power Technologies division. “The power link, using our HVDC technology, will secure reliable and energy-efficient power transmission for consumers in Shanghai.”

China’s State Grid Corporation awarded contracts to Xian High Voltage Switchgear Co. Ltd and New Northeast Electric (Shenyang) High Voltage Switchgear Co. Ltd. to supply 500 kV GIS substations for converter stations, which are needed to connect the HVDC power line to the grid. ABB received subcontracts from both to deliver the main part of the stations. The contracts include delivery within 18 months.

An ABB-built, 940-kilometer long HVDC link commissioned this June connects the Three Gorges power plant with Guangdong province and set a new world power record of 3,300 megawatts. ABB also announced earlier this month it has won a $390 million contract to build a new HVDC power line from the Three Gorges power plant to Shanghai.

New hydropower plants are being built in Central China to meet surging demand for electricity in the rapidly growing eastern coastal regions. HVDC technology is the most reliable and efficient way to transmit power from areas where power is produced to where it will be consumed.

ABB (www.abb.com) is a leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve performance while lowering environmental impact. The ABB Group of companies operates in around 100 countries and employs about 113,000 people.
