ABB’s new doubly-fed wind generators enable higher system efficiencies

2014-10-21 - The latest doubly-fed (DF) generator upgrade from ABB enables higher system efficiencies and covers powers up to 3.6 MW. The generators are based on the same advanced design as the smaller generators in the range, which have proven themselves by delivering high availability over a long working life.

ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, continues to expand its economical DF product family with generators in frame size 630. The efficiency of the new generators at their rated speed is approx. 97.5%. In addition to low voltage they are also available in medium voltage stator designs, which enables OEMs to further improve the total electrical system efficiency of the turbine. The generators come with a recently launched and enhanced slip ring unit that has been designed for low maintenance and a long operating life. Following the introduction of this latest generator model, ABB’s standard DF family now covers powers from 1.5 to 3.6 MW.

“These Multi-Megawatt Class generators can be better optimized by using a medium voltage stator design,” says Raimo Sakki, product manager for wind power generators at ABB. “This provides a major benefit for OEMs, as it enables them to increase the efficiency of the turbine’s electrical system by reducing the size and losses of the step-up transformer and cable system. And now our rigid rotor design together with special carbon-fiber support rings at the winding-ends is even more important for these large generators, where bigger rotor diameters lead to higher centrifugal forces.”

The new generator will be officially introduced at the annual CWP event, which will be held in Beijing, China, October 22-24, 2014.

Over the last 30 years ABB has supplied more than 35,000 wind power generators for all drivetrain types from low speed direct drive and medium speed hybrid to high speed PMGs. It has been manufacturing doubly-fed, semi-variable speed generators since 1997 and has more than 50 years of experience in these types of asynchronous wound rotor slip ring motors and generators. In addition to standard platform products, ABB can make custom designs up to 20 MW. As part of its wind economy offering, ABB supplies fully compatible ‘plug and play’ generator-converter packages that are tested together and ready for operation.

ABB (www.abb.com) is a leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility, industry, and transport and infrastructure customers to improve their performance while lowering environmental impact. The ABB group of companies operates in roughly 100 countries and employs about 145,000 people.
