ABB’s YuMi® first robot ever to be short-listed for prestigious design award from INDEX: Design to Improve Life®

2017-06-16 - Copenhagen, Denmark (June 16, 2017) – ABB is honored to be a finalist for the prestigious INDEX: Award 2017 for YuMi, the world’s first truly collaborative dual arm robot. INDEX: Award is a Danish non-profit organization which inspires, educates and engages people to design sustainable solutions to global challenges.

YuMi, which stands for “You and Me, working together”, has been nominated in the Work category. This category comprises all designs related to work, such as work tools, manufacturing machines, aids and communications, architecture and interior design, control, and management systems. It also comprises services for work environments and strategies for issues related to this, as well as strategies for organizational and managerial development.

The world’s first truly collaborative, industrial robot, YuMi is able to safely work side-by-side with people on shared tasks, without the need for protective cages or barriers. With seven degrees of freedom in each arm, YuMi is able to manipulate and assemble small parts with great accuracy and adapts easily to human work spaces. This versatility, combined with its ease of programming, makes YuMi particularly suitable for supporting the smaller batches and higher product variations characteristic of electronics manufacturing.
