ABB wins $34 million order to boost power capacity in Saudi Arabia

Substation projects to help meet growing demand and improve power quality

Zurich, Switzerland, July 8, 2009 – ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has won a $34 million order from the Saudi Electricity Company for the refurbishment and expansion of 20 distribution substations to strengthen the network in the western provinces of the country. The order was booked in the second quarter.

One of the key objectives is power factor correction to increase capacity and efficiency in the power grid. This will enable the Saudi Electric Co., Saudi Arabia’s national power transmission and distribution utility, to meet growing demand for electricity and improve power quality.

“ABB is already executing several turnkey substation projects in the region,” said Peter Leupp, head of ABB’s Power Systems division. “These new projects will support the country’s efforts to increase power capacity and grid reliability.”

ABB is responsible for the design, engineering, supply, installation and commissioning of the measures to improve the substations. The products supplied will include capacitor banks, medium-voltage switchgear, protection and control equipment, and a SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system that will enable the utility to manage the flow of power in the network. The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2010.

Substations are key installations in the transmission and distribution grid that transform voltage levels and distribute electricity. They facilitate efficient transmission and distribution, and include equipment that enables protection and control of electrical power. ABB is the world’s leading supplier of air- and gas-insulated substations, with an installed base of over 10,000 substations across a range of voltage levels up to 800 kV.

ABB (www.abb.com) is a leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve performance while lowering environmental impact. The ABB Group of companies operates in around 100 countries and employs about 120,000 people.
