ABB wins major million transformer order in Kuwait

2009-07-26 - ABB to supply first 750 MVA transformer in Kuwait

ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has secured a major million order from the Ministry of Water and Electricity Kuwait (MEW) to supply 750 MVA transformers to enhance the availability of much needed power to the state of Kuwait.

MEW in an effort to improve the grid reliability and increase the capacity amidst the rising demand for power has awarded contracts to ABB to build three 400 kV substations.

ABB will design, supply, install, test and commission the transformers, which will be the first of their kind in Kuwait. For the first time, ABB will deliver 400 kV on load tap changers as part of the project.
“ABB’s is very proud of being part of Kuwait’s investment in a stronger power infrastructure,” said Ammar Assadder, BU Transformer territory marketing and sales support manager for MEA. “The transformers are part of the three substations that ABB will supply and commission by 2011.”

Transformers are integral components of any electrical grid, and are a critical element in the efficient and safe conversion of energy across diverse voltage systems. ABB’s transformer portfolio includes power transformers rated up to 1000 kV, dry and liquid distribution transformers as well as related services and components. Shunt reactors are power quality devices that control line voltage by absorbing reactive power.

The Ministry of Electricity and Water owns and operates the transmission and distribution network in Kuwait.

ABB (www.abb.com) is a leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve performance while lowering environmental impact. The ABB Group of companies operates in around 100 countries and employs about 120,000 people.
