ABB wins $10 million power products order in Denmark

Gas insulated switchgear supports integration of wind power into the grid

Zurich, Switzerland, March 30, 2011 – ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has won an order worth $10 million from Energinet.dk, the Danish national power utility and transmission system operator, to supply a 400 kilovolt (kV) gas insulated switchgear (GIS) to help increase the share of wind energy in the Danish grid.

ABB will design, engineer, supply and commission the 400kV GIS and equipment supporting the connections. It will be installed in an indoor gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) substation, which will support a new 400 kV (kilovolt) transmission connection between the substations at Kassø and Tjele, as well as linking with the German and Norwegian grids.

One of the main reasons for building the new link is to help Denmark's power system integrate large amounts of renewable energy, an important element in Denmark’s ambitious climate policy. The new interconnection will double the transmission capacity and improve security of power supply with the help of interconnections linked to grids in neighboring countries, replacing an existing line that is 45 years old. Power security is an important factor when integrating renewable energies like wind, due to their unpredictable and inconsistent nature.

“ABB’s 400kV GIS is extremely compact, and its robust design enhances system efficiency and reliability while minimizing maintenance needs”, said Giandomenico Rivetti, head of ABB’s high-voltage products business, a part of the company’s Power Products division. “We are pleased to support the effort to integrate renewables to help reduce CO2 emissions.”

ABB offers a spectrum of high-voltage products up to 1,100kV including air and gas insulated switchgear, hybrid solutions, instrument transformers, power capacitors and surge arresters that help enhance the reliability, efficiency and quality of power with minimum environmental impact.

ABB (www.abb.com) is a leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve performance while lowering environmental impact. The ABB Group of companies operates in around 100 countries and employs about 124,000 people.
