ABB Pack Expo demo features new Stainless Steel IRB 360 FlexPicker™ and long-reach IRB 4600 palletizing robot

2009-10-01 - Many system integrator partner booths to also feature ABB robot systems

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (October 1, 2009) – ABB Robotics, a leading supplier of industrial robots, will display several new packaging robots at Pack Expo 2009, October 5-7 at the Las Vegas Convention Center. The ABB exhibit (Booth # C-4006) will feature a completely operational packaging line integrating four different robots into a highly efficient picking, packing and palletizing system. In sequence, the demo line includes:
  • A second generation IRB 360 Stainless Steel FlexPicker™ Clean Room ISO class 5 delta robot, picking and sorting randomly placed products of different shapes and sizes, and placing them uniformly on two different conveyors. Suitable for open food industries the new FlexPicker features a 35% smaller footprint, 30-60% faster throughput and a 50% higher payload than the previous model.
  • An IRB 260 performing the case packing function, picking up the sorted product and loading it into plastic bins.
  • An IRB 660 palletizing the bins.
  • An IRB 140 depalletizing the bins, starting the loop over again by dumping the product back onto the initial feed line.

"It is our goal to show potential customers every aspect of a complete packaging line, while highlighting the new IRB 360 Stainless FlexPicker." said Ted Wodoslawsky, vice president of marketing, ABB Robotics, North America. “With its enhanced washdown capability, the industry’s fastest and most reliable pick and place robot will now be available for the complete range of clean room applications.”

A new IRB 4600 palletizing robot will be in a separate area of the booth, mounted on a riser to display its long below-base reach and wide vertical working range. The IRB 4600 can be floor- or shelf-mounted, tilted and even inverted; and at a weight of 880 lbs (400 kg) it is the lightest general-purpose robot ever offered to the market.

A number of authorized ABB Robotics integration partners will also be exhibiting ABB robots at Pack Expo, including:
JLS Automation (Booth #C-3043) – featuring the Talon Series Packaging System to automate many manual product handling functions, integrating sophisticated pick and place technologies with an existing packaging line, or as a complete turnkey packaging system.
Blueprint Automation (Booth #C-221) – exhibiting an IRB 360 FlexPicker featuring a two-pick end-effecter loading a mock dinner tray. The pieces are randomly introduced and shaped, and must be in a specific orientation when placed, much like fitting a puzzle piece.
Raque Food Systems, LLC (Booth #C-1736) – the display is highlighted by a robotic pick and place system optimized for the refrigerated and frozen food industry. Clean, rugged and easy to maintain, the system can place complex product at a speed up to 150 per minute, per lane.
Axium Inc. (Booth #S-4945) – featuring a mixed-load palletizing demonstration with an IRB 240 robot. Axium has developed a flexible, modular pick-to-order system using a robot on a rail for pallet or single case packing.
Systems Automated (Booth #S-5368) – see a realistic warehouse application including an IRB 660 robot. Established in 1983, Systems Automated specializes in turnkey conveyor and control systems for both manufacturing and distribution operations.
