Substation expansion by ABB to enhance grid reliability, help boost power supply and enhance integration of renewables in Norway

2015-01-07 - Expansion of three 420 kV substations to support new line being built to boost supply and improve reliability of power supplies

Following an order placed by Norway’s transmission system operator Statnett, ABB will supply all the electrical equipment for the expansion of three existing 420 kV substations at Ofoten, Bardufoss and Balsfjord.

These substations will support a new power line being built as part of a major grid development program in the northern part of Norway to enhance capacity, reliability and efficiency. The power line is eventually expected to benefit the entire Nordic power system, including a transmission link to Finland. Increased transmission capacity will facilitate the integration of new renewable energy sources such as wind and hydro-power and support the expansion of industrial production.

The scope of the order includes design, engineering, supply, installation and commissioning. In addition to state-of-the-art 420 kV Live Tank Circuit Breakers (LTB) and 132 kV Disconnecting Circuit Breakers (DCB), key product supplies include 132 kV and 22 kV switchgear, disconnectors and instrument transformers and cables.

Statnett operates about 11,000 kilometers of high-voltage power lines and 150 substations all over Norway. The national transmission system operator is also responsible for power connections to Sweden, Finland, Russia, Denmark and the Netherlands. This project, which is scheduled for commissioning in 2017, will therefore have a far-reaching positive impact for the transmission system operator – both in terms of geography and power quality.
