Alcan is the latest company to choose ABB to take over maintenance of its U.K. facilities, joining UK COAL and ExxonMobil. The contracts – based on ABB’s maintenance performance management concept - require ABB to improve availability, reduce maintenance costs, meet international benchmarks for plant performance, and comply with world-class environmental, health and safety standards.
Each contract is performance-related.
“The competitive difference was ABB’s ability to offer us a performance-based contract in which they risk all their profit if they don’t deliver,” says Alcan’s business unit director.
Impressive performance
ABB took over the maintenance management of the facility in February 2004 after conducting a preliminary survey and undergoing an evaluation by Alcan.
“We were very impressed with ABB and their performance when we worked with them on the feasibility study,” says Alcan. “At that stage we began developing a really good relationship with ABB and felt confident to award them the contract.”
ABB has similar performance-based maintenance contracts with some 150 companies worldwide, each of which is geared to improving plant availability and raising profit margins.
