ABB wins $25-million order in South Africa

Drives to help Anglo Platinum more than double output at Mokopane plant

Zurich, Switzerland, Dec. 4, 2007 – ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has won a $25-million order from Anglo Platinum for equipment and services to help more than double production at a processing plant in South Africa.

ABB will deliver two gearless mill drive systems to help run the ore-grinding equipment at Anglo Platinum’s mill in Mokopane, about 280 kilometers north-east of Johannesburg. Anglo Platinum is the largest primary producer of platinum, accounting for about 38 percent of the world’s production.

“Innovative ABB technologies like our gearless mill drive systems, combined with our industry knowledge and experience, significantly improve productivity and process reliability for our minerals and mining customers,” said Veli-Matti Reinikkala, head of ABB’s Process Automation division.

ABB’s gearless mill drive systems will significantly improve the plant's capacity, adding 600,000 tons of ore to the 385,000 tons processed each month now. The expansion will also increase the amount of refined platinum produced, from 200,000 to 430,000 ounces annually.

ABB will also supply pre-engineering and related services, spare parts, transformers, cabling, material delivery, supervision of installation, and commissioning. Production is scheduled to begin in late 2007.

ABB invented and delivered the world’s first gearless mill drive system in 1969, which is still operating with its original converter, providing cost-effective, energy-efficient performance with proven long-term reliability.

Platinum is a key resource for the automotive industry, and 90 percent of global reserves are in South Africa.

ABB (www.abb.com) is a leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve performance while lowering environmental impact. The ABB Group of companies operates in around 100 countries and employs more than 110,000 people.
