ABB signs frame agreement with Ansaldo Energia

First order will increase energy efficiency at new power plant

Zurich, Switzerland, June 28, 2005 – ABB, the leading power and automation technologies group, said today it has signed a frame agreement with the Italian power generation company Ansaldo Energia which will improve energy efficiency at power plants.

Under the agreement, ABB has received a first order, to supply control systems to the 760 megawatt power plant currently being built at Sparanise (Caserta) in southern Italy.

“ABB’s advanced technology and equipment improves the performance of power plants and reduces harmful emissions,” said Peter Smits, head of ABB’s Power Technologies division. “This frame agreement underlines our capabilities in the power generation business.”

ABB is to provide control systems, which will contribute to energy-efficient production, and in separate orders, step-up transformers and generator circuit breakers. The frame agreement covers Sparanise, Rosignano and Leinì power plants, and has a potential value of $22 million.

The technology will include systems for controlling the combined cycle and the gas and steam turbines. They will also make remote information available to help the commissioning and maintenance of the entire plant. The ABB transformers and generator circuit breakers will increase plant availability and help to reduce life-cycle cost, as well as environmental impact.

The Sparanise power plant is being built on behalf of Calenia Energia, a company controlled by EGL of Switzerland and Hera of Italy.

ABB (www.abb.com) is a leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve performance while lowering environmental impact. The ABB Group of companies operates in around 100 countries and employs about 102,000 people.
