ABB Robotics helps to improve productivity for Chinese auto customer

Advanced control systems will improve quality and productivity

Beijing, China, September 29, 2006 - ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, announced today it will provide Press Automation System (PAS) to Hebei Great Wall Motor Co., Ltd (GWM). This represents the most remarkable cooperation between ABB PAS and the Chinese domestic customer after ABB global robotics headquarters moved to Shanghai in April this year.

Great Wall Motor Company Ltd. (GWM) is the largest privately-owned automotive manufacturer in China, and is also the country's first privately-owned auto company listed in the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. At present, products of GWM cover pickups series, SUV series, CUV series, motor-homes and special vehicles, etc. GWM has the capability of developing engines, front and rear axles, and core parts of vehicles. Its capability of producing pickups and engines reaches over 200,000 units per year. GWM has remained a market leader in pickups for eight consecutive years judging from their market share, product range, export volume, and market occupation among all the pickup brands in China. Its SUVs ranks No. 1 in terms of sales volume for the third consecutive year, promoting the growth of the entire SUV segment in China. It is the country's No. 1 automobile manufacturer in terms of sales volume and units for vehicle export In 2006, GWM has seen its overseas car sales increased dramatically and exported its products to EU for the first time, setting a new record of exporting automobiles in the country.

In the contract, ABB will provide two robot lines for GWM's new plant including de-stacker system, blank oiling, 12 robots, end of line conveyors, adaptation of presses and robot tooling. The new plant will help to expand GMW's production capacity of passenger cars, pickups, SUVs and MPVs. The production is scheduled for March 2007. The annual production output of GMW will reach 400,000 units then.
