ABB wins contract to assist development of new Irish power trading system

2006-06-27 - ABB technology to support one electricity market for all of Ireland

Zurich, Switzerland, June 27, 2006 – ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, said today it has won a multi-million Euro contract to provide the computer systems and software infrastructure for the new Single Electricity Market (SEM) for the island of Ireland.

The contract is a joint procurement by the Electricity Supply Board National Grid (ESBNG), the Transmission System Operator and Market Operator in the Republic of Ireland and System Operator Northern Ireland (SONI), the grid operator for Northern Ireland.

Under the agreement, ABB will act as prime contractor, working closely with Navita, a leading provider of energy trading systems.

The new system will be used to trade electrical power consumed by all homes and businesses in Ireland, more than 25,000 gigawatts annually. It will provide for a uniform power market across the island and improved North-South power trading. The new market is expected to increase competition and a better environment for the deployment of merchant power generation throughout Ireland when it commences operation in July 2007.

"ABB is proud to help Ireland create and launch a single, competitive energy market for the whole island," said Samir Brikho, head of ABB’s Power Systems division. "This contract solidifies our position as the world’s pre-eminent supplier of state-of-the-art systems for buying and selling power."

The Irish power trading market resembles systems ABB has built in other parts of the world, such as the United States, Canada, Korea, East China, Australia and the Philippines. The computer systems will simultaneously manage the trading of bulk power while maintaining the security of the electrical grid and handle all of the financial settlements of the market in two currencies – UK pounds and euros.

ABB will design and build the systems in Santa Clara California, and then integrate them with existing metering systems, business systems and energy management systems in Dublin and Belfast. ABB staff from both the US and Ireland will be utilized on the project.

ABB ( is a leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve performance while lowering environmental impact. The ABB Group of companies operates in around 100 countries and employs about 105,000 people.
