2013-07-15 - One of the world’s largest and cost-effective tungsten and polymetallic mines – Nui Phao in Vietnam – is coming into production now and is equipped with a vast range of locally supported ABB power and automation solutions to maximize productivity, energy efficiency and grid stability.

Nui Phao polymetallic mine in Vietnam
Nui Phao is a polymetallic mine with significant deposits of tungsten, fluorspar, bismuth, and copper . Once at full production rates by the end of 2013, the mine will be the largest producer of tungsten outside of China, and among the largest sources of top-grade fluorspar and bismuth in the world.
Owned by Masan Resources, a subsidiary of Vietnam’s largest private company, Masan Group, Nui Phao is located 80 kilometers from the capital Hanoi. The mine is expected to set a new benchmark for state-of-the-art mining in Vietnam.
Throughout 2012 ABB has been awarded around a dozen contracts from Masan Resources to supply a vast array of electrical and automation solutions to power and automate the mine and connect it to the high-voltage transmission grid. The contracts are worth around $20 million.
The solutions include power transformers, medium-voltage switchgear and power factor correction equipment to connect the mine to the transmission grid and ensure a reliable supply of high-quality electricity to the site.

The power is fed throughout the mine by ABB distribution transformers, medium-voltage switchgear, motor control centers and distribution boards – all designed to meet the mining industry’s stringent requirements for durability, safety and reliability. More than 100 ABB low harmonic variable speed drives will reduce energy consumption by speed-controlling the mine’s motor-driven equipment. ABB is also supplying flow meters and other types of instrumentation.
The entire mine will be controlled by an Extended Automation System 800xA solution that includes process control, electrical control, information management and asset optimization – all fully integrated onto the same system 800xA platform.
All the electrical equipment was pre-assembled, factory tested and delivered to the site by ABB in 12 E-houses, ready to be ‘plugged in’ and power up the site. ABB completed all the orders – including design, engineering, installation supervision, and commissioning – on a fast-track basis, which enabled the mine to meet its challenging April 2013 commissioning deadline

ABB was awarded the contracts thanks to the strength of its solutions and ability to provide extensive local support. ABB has large-scale resources in Vietnam, with several manufacturing facilities, a network of local offices, engineering and project management skills, and support resources to help its customers and the country grow.
