Employees in Pinetops and ABB Foundation support Relay for Life

2009-06-04 - Employees in Pinetops, NC raised $31,000 in the fight against cancer.

Cancer affects everyone, and the employees of ABB in Pinetops are determined to do something about it. For 13 years, they have been actively involved in the Relay for Life, a program which raises money for the American Cancer Society. Through the years, employees have held raffles, bake sales, sold purple bows and sponsored hot plate dinners to raise money to help battle this deadly disease. During the past five years, these dedicated employees have raised more than $31,000.

In 2009, ABB in Pinetops partnered with ABB Foundation for the first time. The goal was to raise $8,000 for the annual Relay for Life event which was held the evening of May 1 in Tarboro, NC. ABB chose a Hawaiian theme, Relei for a Cure: Island of Hope. Team members built a tiki hut, lit tiki torches, created a small beach complete with a canoe and volcano. ABB employees came dressed in island attire -- grass skirts, straw hats and Hawaiian shirts. The team sold hamburgers, hot dogs, baked goods, and steak sandwiches in a final push to meet its goal.

At the end of the night, ABB presented a check for $10,552 to the Edgecombe County Relay for Life, the most it had ever raised. The employees raised $6,082 and ABB Foundation contributed an additional $4,470. ABB ranked first for the most money raised in the 16-30 member category, and the team reached the Gold Level by raising more than $500 per member. In all, more than $220,000 was raised by the Edgecombe County Relay for Life organization, placing it eighth in the nation for total money raised.

This year’s team captain was Dianne Glover. Team members included Irene Vick, Yvonne Johnson, Mabel Lewis, Mae Mayo, Charlotte Thigpen, Ed Mayo, Terry Spruill, Mary Forbes, Mary Ann McKeel, Juandine Battle, Lillian Williams, Tom Hansen, Dale Owens, Tyler Owens, Charles Cobb, Barbara Smith, Ricky Tugwell, Sue Tugwell, and Jr. Baker. Many other ABB employees participated in the event as well.
