ABB switchgear to play vital role in upgrade project for Russia’s Winter Olympics airport
2012-03-22 - ABB’s new UniSec switchgear will play a vital role in the project to upgrade Sochi International Airport as the city on Russia’s Black Sea coast prepares to host the 2014 Winter Olympics. The contract continues the relationship with OJSC, the airport operator, that began a few years ago when UniSwitch panels were supplied.
Sochi is Russia’s ninth most important airport. It can handle 1,485 million passengers a year, including some 100,000 passengers from international and intercontinental hubs.
The 2014 Olympics will attract hundreds of thousands of people from countries throughout the world. Absolute safety and high quality and reliability standards are a must if the airport infrastructure is to withstand this "onslaught", hence the upgrade project.
Two UniSec panels, consisting of five units each, will be installed in the 10 kV / 0.4 kV distribution substation to supply the complex of buildings, which includes offices, the VIP-terminal for the Russian President and Prime Minister and VIP-village of eight cottages. This complex will also accommodate the senior management of Olympstroy, the state corporation responsible for the design, building and operation of the Olympic facilities and which will also manage the event.
Although the equipment is standard, the contract involves a DTO (Design To Order) project based on the customer’s technical specifications and includes a series of seismic tests to confirm its suitability for demanding airport applications. The seismic tests on the UniSec equipment were performed by the ISMES-CESI laboratories in accordance with the requirements of IEEE standard 693 (Seismic Design of Substations) and was successfully passed.
ABB’s customer for this project is Oleg Deripaska, as proprietor of Krasnodar Electro Set Montaj (KESM), the enterprise owned by Bazel, the owner of Sochi Airport.
This important contract was acquired thanks to close collaboration between the staff of ABB Russia, the Moscow Front End Sales team, and the marketing department in Dalmine, Italy
Many facilities are being built for the 2014 Olympics (accommodation for the athletes, stadiums, supermarkets, infrastructures, etc.), so this project will certainly pave the way for other important contracts in the future.
