ABB named 2018 Company of the Year for digital grid communications

2018-01-24 - New Frost & Sullivan report recognizes ABB for setting the benchmark for digitalization with its grid communication portfolio

ABB announced today it has been named the market leader in digital grid communications in North America by Frost & Sullivan, a leading technology research and advisory firm. Frost & Sullivan presented ABB the 2018 Company of the Year Award based on its demonstrated excellence in growth strategy and implementation in the field for its wireless communication solutions.

“Implementing industry-leading best practices to achieve operational excellence is at the core of what ABB does,” the report said. “As the electric grid undergoes a digital transformation, the guarantee of a robust and a highly reliable communication infrastructure becomes crucial—particularly for executing increasingly complex, mission-critical, and emerging operations.”

The award recognizes ABB’s strategic approach of being the one-point contact for all communications needs in the utility industry, with a full range of solutions spanning wireless networks, optical networks, power line carriers, teleprotection and communication network management. Frost & Sullivan noted that because most of ABB’s competitors specialize in a single type of communication that is either restricted to wireless networks or optical fiber, ABB is unique in its ability to enable utilities to comprehensively address advanced metering infrastructure, distribution automation, substation automation, security and mobile workforce applications.

“Frost & Sullivan’s Company of the Year Award for digital grid communications in North America is a testament to ABB’s continued leadership in communication networks and its track record with leading utilities,” said Massimo Danieli, head of ABB’s Grid Automation business within the company’s Power Grids division. “Interoperable communication networks are critical for control and operation of an increasingly digitalized grid, and our ABB Ability™-based solutions are ideally suited to support this transition, reinforcing our position as a partner of choice for enabling a stronger, smarter and greener grid.”

Frost & Sullivan’s analysts attribute ABB’s success to its high degree of innovation with products and technologies, and leadership in customer value. With more than 70 million connected devices and 70,000 control systems, ABB Ability is “a visionary approach to strategically invest in product innovation by leveraging ABB’s breadth of technological expertise,” the report said.

“ABB Ability offers a unified, cross-industry digital capability—extending from device to edge to cloud—that provides a robust wireless communication platform that lays the foundation for a utility’s smart grid communications infrastructure,” said Farah Saeed, Principal Consultant for Frost & Sullivan. “ABB is a market leader in digital communications, as well as a pioneer with substation technology, leading the way with its ABB Ability platform and private wireless mesh networks.”

The ABB Ability wireless solutions enable utilities to improve system reliability and resiliency, increase safety, and maximize operational efficiency and ABB’s wireless products also serve industries includ-ing oil and gas, industrial control systems, transportation, mining, and smart cities.
